SAIL the CANARY ISLANDS
Tenerife
is the largest of the canary islands. It boasts the highest mountain in Spain, which is also a dormant volcano. Standing at 3718m from sea-level. The south of the island has many white sand man-made beaches, in contrast, the pine forests dominate the centre of the island and the volcanic black sand beaches and cities with their world famous carnival can be found in the north.
Fuerteventura
is the second largest of the Canaries, with over 150km of white sandy beaches. It is certainly one for beach-lovers. Windsurf, kitesurf amongst other water sports are very popular here due to the constant winds and waves averaging around 2m. Further inland you will find many cheesemaker’s and are able to try their great produce, traditional to the island.
Gran Canaria
is known for its beaches and party-goers. However, Gran Canaria offers a lot more in the way of sightseeing and nature. There is a 26,000 hectare national park, an amazing expanse of sand dunes, picturesque towns such as Puerto Mogan, steeped in architecture. Plenty to see and lots to entertain on this beautiful island.
Lanzarote
has a very noteable volcanic appearance, with lots of natural caves and stunning landscapes. If you are a wine lover, Lanzarote has many wineries where the tasting is a must along with their local cuisine. Camel riding across the vast landscapes is also very popular in Lanzarote and from the north of the island you are able to see the very small island of La Graciosa with under 1000 habitants.
La Palma
is known as the ‘isla bonita’ (beautiful island) because of its imposing volcanoes, deep, thick forests and, pretty little beaches around the coast and the most stunning display of stars at night.
It is one of the best places in the world to explore the sky, there astronomy tours, workshops and much more.
There are hundreds of trekking paths with amazing views, amazing gastronomy, chic hotels and plenty of museums to visit. There is always something to keep you busy in La Palma.
La Gomera
is the second from smallest of the Canary Islands, it is steeped in history and charm. The island was first written about in the early 1400’s and since, has had many stories to tell, British and Dutch invasions, struggles of living on such a rugged island and even visits from Christopher Columbus who is said to have had a mistress in La Gomera. The core is filled with moss covered forests which are normally steeped in a mystical mist, from this to the lovely peaceful beaches around the coast, La Gomera certainly is charming.
El Hierro
is the smallest, youngest and most south western of the Canary Islands which was known as the edge of civilisation until America was discovered. It has a magical feel, with more than 50% of the island officially protected.
El Hierro is well-known for its SCUBA diving due to it’s crystal clear water, lots of natural rock pools and caves. There are stunning hikes, paragliding and lots more to enjoy on this otherwise sleepy little island.
